Introduction to Phase 4
In this video Mrs Bennett explains to you the types of things your children will learn during Phase 4.
Teaching Overview
Even though there are no new sounds to learn, the children will learn to recognise words according to how many consonants and vowels they have. The most common of these types of words are:
CVC words
Consonant - Vowel - Consonant
e.g. sad / dog / van / cod / cat
CCVC words
Consonant - Consonant - Vowel - Consonant
e.g. frog / trap / flat / crab / spam
CVCC words
Consonant - Vowel - Consonant - Consonant
e.g. test / nest / sand / pink / tent

Tricky Words - Phase 4
As well as learning sounds, the children also have to learn tricky words in each phase. Tricky words are words that cannot be easily sounded out (segmented) or blended. They are usually words that we use everyday that are tricky to read or write.
Here are the tricky words that the children should learn whilst working on Phase 4 phonics.
