In this video Mrs Raikes explains to you what your children will learn during Phase 3.

Teaching Overview

These are the sounds that your child will learn during Phase 3.

Set 6 j / v / w / x
Set 7 y / z, zz / qu

Once the children are familiar with Sets 6 and 7, they move on to learn the following sounds that are made up of 2 or more letters.

ch

(e.g. chip)

sh

(e.g. ship)

th*

(e.g. thin)

th*

(e.g. then)

ng

(e.g. ring)

ai

(e.g. tail)

ee

(e.g. feet)

igh

(e.g. high)

oo**

(e.g. book)

oo**

(e.g. boot)

ar

(e.g. farm)

or

(e.g. for)

ur

(e.g. hurt)

ow

(e.g. cow)

oi

(e.g. coin)

ear

(e.g. dear)

air

(e.g. fair)

ure

(e.g. sure)

er

(e.g. her)

* 'th' can make more than one sound. You will need to listen carefully to hear the difference.

** 'oo' can also make more than one sound.

The children should also learn letter names during Phase 3. This is really important because we use this to help children tell the difference between capital letters (e.g. A, B, C) and lower case letter (e.g. a, b, c). Letter names represent capital letters and sounds represent lower case letters.

Phase 3 Resources

You will find these resources helpful to you as your child works on Phase 3.

Tricky Words - Phase 3

As well as learning sounds, the children also have to learn tricky words in each phase. Tricky words are words that cannot be easily sounded out (segmented) or blended. They are usually words that we use everyday that are tricky to read or write.

Here are the tricky words that the children should learn whilst working on Phase 3 phonics.
